How to Recreate Anyma's "Consciousness" in Ableton Live 2026

Anyma's "Consciousness" is built on three interlocking ideas: a slowly morphing wavetable pad that breathes underneath everything, a surgical kick-bass relationship that hits harder than it has any right to, and pitched vocal fragments that drift in and out like signal interference. Get those three layers right and the rest of the track falls into place around them.

Step 1: Set the Foundation — Tempo, Key, and Arrangement

Before a single sound plays, the architectural decisions matter more in this style than almost anywhere else. "Consciousness" sits at 140 BPM — on the faster end of melodic techno, which gives it urgency without tipping into industrial territory. The track is rooted in A minor, and that tonality — cold, unresolved, reaching — is not accidental. Almost every melodic element orbits A minor without ever comfortably landing on a resolution.

  • Set your Ableton project to 140 BPM, A minor
  • Work in a 32-bar arrangement view loop to start — this style of track breathes across long sections
  • Lay down an empty 8-bar clip in every channel first; use clip colour coding to separate drums, bass, pads, and FX before a single note goes in
  • Set your master output ceiling to -1 dBTP from session open — you will get loud fast in this genre

Think of the arrangement as three zones: the tension build (bars 1–16), the drop and full-frequency statement (bars 17–48), and the gradual dissolution (bars 49–64). "Consciousness" never actually releases — it dissolves. Keep that in mind as you build.

Step 2: The Kick and Sub — Building the Techno Engine

The kick in "Consciousness" is not decorative. It is load-bearing. It punches at around 60–65Hz in the fundamental, with a click transient that cuts through the pad wash without sounding brittle.   • Run the kick through a Glue Compressor: threshold -18 dB, ratio 4:1, attack 3ms, release 80ms
  • High-pass the click layer at 200Hz — keeps the body clean
  • The sub bass is a pure sine in Operator, tuned to A1 (55Hz), sustained for the full bar

Now set up the sidechain:

  1. Route the kick to a dedicated return/sidechain bus
  2. Insert a Compressor on the sub bass channel in sidechain mode, keyed to the kick bus
  3. Ratio: 10:1 — Attack: 1ms — Release: 120ms — Threshold: -24 dB
  4. The gain reduction meter should be swinging between -8 dB and -12 dB on every kick hit
  5. Add a second, gentler sidechain (ratio 2:1, attack 10ms) across the entire mix bus — this is the "room pumping" effect you hear on the full track

  • Oscillator 1: Load a complex digital/formant wavetable (the "Digital" or "Spectral" categories in Wavetable work well). Set wavetable position to around 30% and modulate it with LFO 1 at a rate of 0.08 Hz — slow enough that a full cycle takes around 12 seconds. Depth: 40%
  • Oscillator 2: Same wavetable category, offset position to 60%, detune +7 cents. This creates the stereo width and harmonic tension
  • Filter: Ladder Low-Pass, cutoff at 1.2 kHz, resonance 18%. Modulate cutoff with Envelope 2: attack 4s, decay 8s, sustain 70%, release 6s. This is the slow open-and-close movement you hear as the track progresses
  • Amp envelope: Attack 3s, decay 0s, sustain 100%, release 5s — no clicking, no sharp edges
  • Unison: 4 voices, spread 0.4 — keep it controlled or it clouds the low-mids

After synthesis, the pad goes through this processing chain:

  1. EQ Eight: High-pass at 180Hz (remove sub competition with the kick), bell cut at 320Hz (-3 dB, Q 1.2 — clears the mud pocket), high shelf boost at 8kHz (+2 dB — adds air without harshness)
  2. Chorus-Ensemble (Ableton's built-in): rate 0.3 Hz, depth 0.6ms, dry/wet 30%
  3. Reverb (Valhalla Room or Ableton Hybrid Reverb): pre-delay 18ms, decay 4.2s, damping 35%, dry/wet 28%
  4. Utility: Width at 120% — only after the reverb, so the wet signal gets the extra spread

Play an A minor chord voicing — A2, E3, G3, C4 — and let it sit. Don't add vibrato, don't add filter automation yet. Let the LFO do the movement.

Step 4: The Vocal Fragments — Ghost Signal Processing

The pitched vocal textures in "Consciousness" are not conventional lead vocals. They sit in the mix at a level where you're not sure if you're hearing words or harmonics — that ambiguity is intentional and is one of the track's defining qualities.   3. Insert Corpus (resonator): mode Beam, tune to A3, resonance 60%, decay 1.8s, dry/wet 50% — this turns the vocal into something between a voice and a struck metal surface
  4. Follow with Saturator in Soft Sine mode, drive at 18% — adds the faint harmonic distortion that glues it to the pad
  5. Heavy reverb: pre-delay 30ms, decay 6s, dry/wet 55%. The vocal should feel like it's coming from inside the reverb, not sitting on top of it
  6. Automate volume with a slow fade in over 8 bars — it should feel like the vocal is surfacing from underwater

Target: -14 LUFS integrated for streaming, though club-ready masters for this genre often land closer to -8 to -10 LUFS on a separate DJ master version.

  • The pad should sit at -9 dB in the mix when the drop arrives — louder than you think, because it is the emotional centre
  • Use send reverbs, not insert reverbs on most channels — a shared reverb bus at -18 dB creates cohesion and makes the mix feel like a single room
  • Stereo width check: mono-sum and confirm the kick, sub, and one pad layer all survive in mono — club systems rarely run full stereo below 200Hz
  • The master limiter ceiling: -0.3 dBTP, lookahead 3ms, transparent limiting only — if you're hitting more than 2 dB of limiting you need to pull back a channel, not push the limiter harder

Step 6: The Finishing Touches — Movement and Tension

The difference between a technically correct recreation and something that actually sounds like "Consciousness" is automation. Anyma's productions feel alive because nothing stays static for more than eight bars — but the changes are subtle enough that you feel them before you notice them.

  • Filter automation on the pad: Draw a slow, irregular low-pass cutoff curve — not a straight line. Bring it from 800Hz up to 2.4kHz over 32 bars, with two or three small dips in between. Irregular is human
  • Reverb pre-delay automation: Increase the pad reverb pre-delay from 18ms to 35ms at the breakdown — this subtle shift makes the space feel larger without changing the decay time
  • Kick velocity: Every fourth bar, drop the kick velocity by 8 on beat 3 only — creates a slight groove asymmetry that stops the track feeling mechanical
  • White noise layer: A high-passed (8kHz+) noise layer at -22 dB, volume-automated to swell in for 4 bars before the drop — you barely hear it consciously but its absence would be noticed
  • Breakdown strip: At bar 33, mute the kick and sub entirely for 8 bars. Let the pad and vocal fragments carry the track alone. This is the emotional core of the production — do not undermine it by leaving the drums in
